CanWarn: CanWarn Hamilton Picnic 2010

This year we thought it would be nice to get together and have an end-of-season CanWarn Hamilton picnic. It will be held on September 12, 2010 at Binbrook Conservation Area. The park opens at 8am and we will be there around 10-11am.

As CanWarn Hamilton is not funded through any means, we ask that everyone brings their own food and drink. There are BBQs throughout the area, but you may want to bring your own anyway.

There is swimming, a change house, lots of trails for nature walks, and great fishing. Docks are available for boats and canoes (no gas motors allowed). Pets are allowed, but must be on a leash.

Bring the family and make a full day of it!

Date: Sunday, September 12, 2010
Time: 11am onwards
Place: Binbrook Conservation Area
      (http://www.npca.ca/conservation-areas/binbrook/default.htm)
Binbrook Entry Prices:
      Car & Driver $ 5.00
      Adults $ 4.00
      Seniors/ Students $ 3.00
      Max. per car $15.00

If cancelled due to inclement weather, we will move it to another date. If you are on our email list, you will receive notification in both cases.

On picnic day, talk-in will be on the VE3TVI repeater, 146.805 - [Tone: 151.4] (which is local to the Binbrook area), and will be linked to VE3RFI, 443.250 + [Tone: 151.4].

CANWARN Training Schedule 2010

Folks...hope everyone has been enjoying the amazing start to the month of March. The warm, sunny weather is a prelude to what we will be seeing a lot more often by late April. The return of warm and humid weather in April will also herald the start of the spring/summer severe weather season in Ontario. This severe weather will take the form of powerful thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, flooding rains, large hail and tornadoes.

The 2009 season had a number of significant events. On July 9th three American tourists lost their lives in a fishing camp in Northwestern Ontario north of Dryden when a Fujita Scale 2 tornado moved through the camp. On August 20th, 18 tornadoes were spawned from a series of supercell thunderstorms that moved over southcentral and eastern Ontario. These 18 tornadoes represented a new Canadian record for most tornadoes in one day. Yet another milestone will be reached this spring, May 31st, 2010 will be the 25th anniversary of the Barrie and Grand Valley tornadoes…the last confirmed Fujita Scale 4 tornadoes to occur in Ontario…that, between them, took 11 lives.

News: Ontario's New Rules For Hand-Held Wireless And Entertainment Devices

As of October 26, 2009, Ontario's new distracted driving law will make it illegal for motorists to use hand-held wireless communication devices or any hand-held electronic entertainment devices while driving.

Specific attention has been given to the Amateur Radio community. Stated in a document at the Government of Ontario's web site:

The use of hand-held radios by amateur radio operators (who provide assistance, especially in emergency situations such as severe storms and blackouts) will be phased out within three years, to allow hands-free technologies to be developed.
